The community and SASEfam is willing to help in whatever shape possible, and that's what Dustin finds so singularly important. Whether that's offering a place to sleep during your travels, helping you navigate career path, or simply making a new friend and having someone to talk to, there's something here in this community for everyone.
"I started down my own path of volunteerism with SASE because the organization's mission helped me become successful in my career journey, and I felt it was only fitting that I pay it forward for the next generation in the SASE community," Dustin explained. "I remember when I first went to the Exelon booth at my first SASE National Convention in 2016 and didn't' receive an interview opportunity. Rather than give up, I turned to SASE, which provided me the community and development opportunities that prepared me for another interview with Exelon three years later. That evolved in to a full-time job offer, and I still happily work at Exelon. Volunteering with SASE is a way to give back and make an impact where I go."
Looking back over his years of involvement with SASE, Dustin is perhaps most proud of leading the planning and execution for the SASE National Convention in 2022 and then building upon it in 2023.
"I knew coming back to an in-person event post-pandemic would have its challenges, and I was produ to take those lessons learned to make it an even better event the following year, Dustin said.
A spirit of fun has also contributed enormously to Dustin's commitment to SASE, with special memories including Northeast-region summer and winter SASEcations, where members would informally gather and connect for a full weekend during winter and summer breaks.
"No matter how you choose to involve yourself with SASE," he said, "Be true to yourself, be adaptable, and go with your gut feeling. Never forget your roots, and always bring people up with you along your journey."
